And when it comes to repping Panerai automatics? VS Factory is pretty much it. Other factories have tried. The results aren't great — wrong functions, sloppy finishing, you name it. Manual-wind Panerais, sure, a few factories can pull those off decently. But for a full automatic like the 088, VS is the only game in town.

Let's get into what this thing actually looks like up close.

The Dial — GMT Layout Done Right

This isn't your typical Panerai dial. Most PAMs keep it minimal — two hands, maybe a small seconds subdial, call it a day. The 088 goes a completely different direction.

You've got a dual-ring layout on a black dial. Outer ring handles the GMT 24-hour track, inner ring is your standard hour markers. Small seconds lives at 9 o'clock on a silver subdial that pops against the black background. Genuinely one of the more visually interesting Panerai dials out there.

Date window sits at 3 o'clock. Font is clean and properly aligned, plus it has a magnifier — which honestly not many PAM references even have.

Lume and Crystal

The lume on this is strong. That yellowish-green tone across the indices and hands, fills are even, edges are crisp. No bleeding. Under a sapphire crystal that's dead clear — no distortion, no weird blue tint at angles. Looks right.

Case and Crown Guard — The Finishing Tells the Story

316L stainless steel case. And the polish on this is actually impressive — high shine, very reflective. That kind of finish only happens when the factory is spending real time on the polishing stage. You can tell.

Crown guard bridge has a brushed texture which contrasts nicely against the polished case surfaces. Good detail separation.

Quick note on how the crown works: pop the guard open, pull the crown to the first position for a quick-set hour hand jump with linked date change, wind it from pushed-in position. Push crown back in, lock the guard down — that's what keeps the water resistance solid. VS rates this for swimming. Not diving, but pool and casual water exposure should be fine.

Strap and Clasp — This Part Surprised Me

Leather strap, calfskin. But the real talking point here is the deployant clasp. A double-push butterfly clasp with Panerai branding inside. This matters because almost no rep Panerai comes with a gen-style deployant. VS did it with the PAM00213 before, and the 088 is only the second model to get this treatment. The clasp action feels solid — no wobble, clean snap.

Caseback and Movement

Flip it over. Brushed outer ring on the caseback, deep engravings that are sharp and legible. Every character cut with definition — not that shallow laser stuff you see on budget reps. Serial numbers match the case. VS clearly had a gen piece to reference when they tooled this.

Inside you're looking at a P9001-type movement, specifically the OP VIII caliber. Automatic, rotor is engraved. Runs smooth from what I can tell. The watch also ships with a bonus luminous rubber strap and a strap-change tool, which is a nice touch — lets you switch up the look without buying extra accessories.
