VS Factory Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 232.30.46.21.01.001 — Hands-On Review

So I finally got my hands on the VS Factory Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M, ref 232.30.46.21.01.001. Black dial, ceramic bezel, steel bracelet. Been wanting to do a proper write-up on this one for a while now. Let's get into it.

The Bezel

First thing you notice — the ceramic bezel insert. Silver engraved markings, same material as gen. Feels solid. The bezel action is smooth, no rough edges catching your skin when you rotate it, which honestly wasn't always the case with older batches.

And yeah, I need to bring this up. Earlier versions of this ref had a known issue where the bezel markings would fade, peel, or straight up flake off over time. That was a real problem. VS has since switched to a different coating process and the newer runs hold up much better. No more peeling. The lume pip at 12 is also correct — right size, right position.

Dial, Hands, Lume

Black dial looks clean. The applied Arabic numerals at 12, 9, and 6 have good depth to them — they pop off the dial the way they should. Lume fill across the indices is even, no sloppy overflow or thin spots that I could see.

Hands are decent. Polishing is what I'd call acceptable — there's the tiniest bit of roughness on a couple edges if you really go looking under a loupe, but on the wrist? You won't notice. Not a dealbreaker by any stretch.

The Movement — VS In-House 8500

This is where VS earns its reputation, honestly.

The clone 8500 inside this thing is what sets it apart from every other rep of this ref on the market. Quickset hour hand — you adjust the date by cycling the hour hand through two full rotations, slow-jump date change, exactly how the gen Omega calibre 8500 works. No other factory replicates this correctly. Others just slap a generic movement in there and call it a day.

Pull the crown to position two, turn clockwise — that's your time setting. Same direction as gen. Winding feel is smooth.

Accuracy and reliability? The VS 8500 has been around long enough at this point that it's well proven. Stable, keeps good time, solid track record in the community.

One difference worth noting though. On the gen, the fine-tuning regulator sits underneath the balance wheel. On the VS version, there's a small adjustment mechanism visible next to the balance wheel instead. That's really the only tell from the movement side. Both barrel wheels on either side of the movement are functional, not decorative. Everything ticks — literally.

Case and HEV

Mid-case has brushed finishing on both sides. Done well, consistent grain direction. The helium escape valve on the upper left is there — standard for any serious dive watch. Its job is pressure relief during deep saturation dives so the crystal doesn't blow off. Mostly a design element for 99% of wearers but it's good that it's present and functional.

Crown screws down properly. Typical screw-in setup for a diver.

Bracelet and Clasp

OK so the bracelet on this one genuinely surprised me.

Center links are brushed, outer links have a very subtle satin finish. On the wrist it just feels... right. Rounded edges on the side chamfers, no sharp corners digging into you. The overall weight and drape of the bracelet is comfortable — I've worn reps where the bracelet feels like an afterthought, this isn't one of those.

Clasp action is excellent. Opens and closes with a satisfying click, no wobble, no slop. Inside of the clasp is also brushed with clean engravings. There's a micro-adjust extension link built in too, handy for when your wrist swells up in the heat.

Quick tip if you're buying — don't start removing links the second you open the box. Put it on first, figure out how many links actually need to come out, then size it. Saves you the headache.

Five-Code Verification

VS Factory runs a five-code matching system on their pieces. Here's how it breaks down:

# Code Location
1 Case engraving (lower left of the case)
2 Movement engraving (visible through caseback)
3 Caseback barcode
4 Packaging box code
5 Hang tag / warranty card

All five codes should match. It's a straightforward way to verify you're getting a genuine VS Factory unit and not some bait-and-switch from a shady dealer.

Sizing Options

This ref comes in two case sizes — 42mm and 43.5mm. Color options are black and blue. Personally I think the black dial on steel is the most versatile combo. Classic, understated, goes with everything. The blue is nice too but the black just hits different.

Final Thoughts

The VS Factory Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 232.30.46.21.01.001 is a solid piece. The ceramic bezel issues from older batches are resolved, the clone 8500 movement delivers correct functionality that no other factory matches, and the bracelet finishing is genuinely impressive for a rep at this level.

If you're in the market for a Planet Ocean, VS is the only factory I'd point you toward for this ref. The movement alone makes the decision pretty easy.
