VS Factory Panerai Submersible PAM00683 In-Depth Review: The 42mm Sweet Spot for Smaller Wrists

What's up guys, it's Xiao Pang from vsfwatcheshub. Today we're looking at the VS Factory PAM00683 from the Submersible line. 42mm diver. Let's get into how this thing actually holds up.

First Impressions Out of the Box

The PAM00683 is basically the entry-level new release in Panerai's Submersible lineup this year. Lowest retail among the new refs too. 42mm case diameter, roughly 14mm thick — way more wrist-friendly than the 47mm models if you're rocking a smaller wrist. Most guys in China and honestly a lot of collectors in the US fall into that category.

Steel case. Feels solid in hand, not cheap at all.

The unidirectional ceramic bezel is crisp. Indices line up perfectly, the lume pip shape and finishing match gen, and the rotation feel is smooth — light but not loose. VS nailed this part.

Dial Details — Blue Accents Are the Tell

Pure black dial behind a sapphire crystal. Paired with that blue sub-seconds dial and you get a pretty aggressive, masculine look. Sub-seconds sits at 9 o'clock, date window at 3. Symmetrical layout. Lume on the indices and hands is strong enough to read time in low light without issues.

Here's something worth noting. Panerai has been putting blue sub-seconds hands on a bunch of their key new references lately — PAM01312, PAM01359, PAM01499 and others. It's become the easiest way to tell new gen from older production. The 683 goes even further with the blue. Not just the small seconds hand but also the text on the dial and the "300m" depth rating — all in blue. Nice touch honestly.

Case and Crown Work

Crown is 316L steel. Classic Panerai crown guard bridge design. The brushing on the bridge is done well — smooth, consistent grain direction. Sits right up against gen quality.

Zoom in on the engraving on the bridge and it holds up. Depth is even, font sizing is correct. The overall bridge proportions — width, taper — are on point. No complaints here.

Strap and Buckle

Black rubber strap. Waterproof obviously. Soft enough for daily wear, doesn't dig into the wrist. The lugs have a quick-release system — just poke a hard object into the slot and push inward. Spring bar slides out, swap your strap in seconds.

Buckle has a matte finish. Standard Panerai trapezoidal pin buckle with the brand logo engraved on top. Under magnification the edges are clean, lettering is sharp, brushed finish is visible. No rough spots or burrs.

Caseback

316L steel. 12-sided shape, sealed design — matches the gen layout completely. Edge engravings are legible and the serial number lines up with what's on the hang tag. Font depth and sizing check out against retail.

One small thing though. Compared side by side with gen, the caseback engraving runs slightly shallower. Minor, and nobody's ever going to see your caseback in the wild. But worth mentioning.

Movement: What You Need to Know About the OP XXXIV

VS uses an OP XXXIV movement in this ref. The gen 683 isn't running an in-house caliber either so that's fine conceptually, but the balance wheel positioning is different from retail. That's just how it is.

The OP XXXIV comes out of a Richemont Group movement manufacturer — same factory that supplies calibers to Cartier, Baume & Mercier and a few other Richemont brands. Different brands get different specs though. Gen OP XXXIV offers 72 hours of power reserve. The VS version realistically delivers around 48 hours. Perfectly usable for daily wear, you just can't leave it sitting for three days and expect it to still be running.

Date Adjustment — Here's Where It Differs

Gotta be upfront about this one. The VS version uses a slow-jump date mechanism. Gen is instant-jump — crosses midnight and the date snaps over immediately. VS version you can adjust date forwards and backwards which is convenient, pull to position two for time setting. Standard stuff.

Real talk? Nobody will ever know unless they're adjusting the watch themselves. It's a behind-closed-doors difference.

Bottom Line

The PAM00683 is a solid diver with real wrist presence but without the bulk of a 47mm Panerai. 42mm wears comfortably on most wrists. Yeah the movement placement is off versus gen and the date change method isn't identical. Those are facts. But externally? You can wear this thing confidently. Nothing gives it away on the wrist.
