So VS just dropped a new piece, the Panerai Submersible PAM00974. If you're familiar with the PAM00684, you basically already know what this is — it's the 684's cousin with a different strap setup. Looks almost identical. The 974 comes on a leather strap, and you get a rubber one thrown in too.

The Basics

Small case on this one. 42mm diameter, 15.4mm thick by my measurement.

Case material is where things get interesting. Gen uses precious metal. VS went with steel and rose gold plating. Gotta say though — the plating is seriously well done. Super bright finish, the polished sides catch light real nice. Crown guards, bezel edges, strap stitching — all clean work from VS on this PAM00974 rep.

2. Dial Printing Depth

Gen has deeper engravings and bolder print across the board. The chapter ring markers at 15, 30, 45 — thicker on retail. VS went a bit too shallow and thin on these details. Not a dealbreaker at arm's length but side by side you'd notice.

3. Lume Plots

OK this one's actually pretty noticeable if you know what to look for. VS made them almost completely flat. Like flush-with-the-dial flat. VS is still running their Clone P9000 in this. Gen doesn't use a P.9010 here either — Panerai actually went with an in-house caliber from their group brand. Makes the gen a touch thinner overall. Biggest visual tell? Balance wheel position. Gen sits at 6 o'clock. VS sits at 7.

Date adjustment is different too. On the VS you pull to first position, rotate twice to jump the date. Gen lets you quick-set the date directly from first position. Minor thing but worth knowing.
