VS Factory Panerai Submersible PAM00979 — Full Carbon Fiber Build, Worth the Hype?

So VS Factory just dropped their version of the Panerai PAM00979. The gen barely hit the market and VS already cloned it. Gotta respect the turnaround.

Specs

The Carbon Fiber Situation

Case, bezel, dial — all carbon fiber. Pick it up and the first thing you notice is how light this thing is. That matters more than people think on a 47mm watch. Big case means more chances to bang it around, and carbon fiber just shrugs off scratches. Wear it daily for months, still looks fresh out of the box.

Dial finishing is clean. Hour markers, hands, everything lines up tight. No dust under the crystal, no alignment issues. Simple layout — hour and minute hands, small seconds at 9, date window at 3. Classic Panerai cushion shape. You know what it is from across the room.

Lume

Hands are loaded with lume. Bezel pip too. Here's the thing most people miss — this ref actually has dual-color lume. Green and blue, just like gen. Not all reps get that right. In low light it reads perfectly fine.

Bezel

Uni-directional rotating bezel. Dive timing function. Click feel is solid with decent detents. When you're not using it just line up the lume pip with 12 o'clock. Nothing complicated.

Movement & How to Set It

VS owns the Panerai rep game when it comes to movements, not even close. The PAM00979 runs their in-house clone movement and the functionality mirrors gen exactly. Worth walking through the setting procedure because I get asked about this a lot.

Pop open the crown guard bridge first. Then:

Pull to first position — date adjust. Now here's where people get confused. You can't quick-set the date independently. You have to cycle the hands past 12 to advance the date. It's a slow-change mechanism. Good news though, date goes forward AND backward so if you overshoot you just reverse it. No need to spin through 30 days.

Pull to second position — time setting. Standard hour and minute adjustment.

Push everything back in when you're done. Default first position is manual winding but the movement is automatic so daily wear keeps it wound. Don't overthink it.

Date changeover happens within about 15 minutes of midnight. Totally normal range.

On the Wrist

47mm sounds huge on paper. And yeah it's a big watch. But carbon fiber keeps the weight way down so it doesn't feel like you strapped a hockey puck to your wrist. Strap length is actually not that long either — seen guys with 6.5 inch wrists pull it off no problem. Obviously if you've got bigger wrists this thing was basically made for you.

Final Take

VS Factory PAM00979. Carbon case, carbon dial, light on the wrist, tough to scratch. Movement ops mirror gen. Build quality is VS standard which at this point everybody in the rep community knows means top tier for Panerai. If you're into the big sporty PAM look and want something that won't show wear, this is the one.
