Alright so this one's been sitting on my desk for a few days now and I've had enough time to really put it through its paces. The VS Factory Panerai Submersible PAM01039. Gen retails around $22K, dropped back in 2019, 47mm case. VS has the best version out right now and honestly it's not even close. Let me walk you through it.

The Dial — Yeah, It Looks Weird. That's the Point.

First thing you notice is the dial texture. It's not your usual sandwich dial, not a clean matte finish either. This one uses a canvas-style material that honestly looks like denim under a loupe. Gives off this rugged, casual vibe that works surprisingly well on a dive-style piece.

Small seconds subdial sits at 9 o'clock with a red torpedo-shaped hand. Date window at 3. Then there's that red arrow hand — the GMT. Super practical if you deal with people in different time zones regularly. Set the GMT hand to their local time, keep the main hands on yours. Done.

Lume plots on the hour markers and hand tips. And about that lume...

Panerai's lume game has always been top tier and VS nailed it here. Thick application, strong glow, blue emission. Legibility in the dark is zero issue.

Crystal and Bezel

Sapphire crystal, confirmed. Unidirectional rotating bezel with solid detents — clicks are tight, tactile. No wobble, no play. Sounds right too.

The Case — Carbon Fiber, Stupid Light

This is where PAM01039 gets interesting for a lot of folks. Full carbon fiber case. VS Factory has been doing carbon since the PAM00616 and they've refined it through multiple iterations at this point. The tech is mature.

What does that mean in practice? Way lighter than steel. Scratch resistant. Takes bumps and knocks like a champ. Basically you can daily this without babying it.

Caseback

Solid caseback with the 36th America's Cup engraving. Lettering is crisp, depth is good. No complaints.

Movement — VS 901 (P.9010 Clone)

Running the VS 901 inside. Quick-set date, quick-set hour hand for the GMT function, solid power reserve. Stability-wise this is still the strongest clone movement you can get for Panerai reps. Period.

Strap and Clasp

Black rubber strap. For a 47mm Panerai I always recommend rubber over steel or leather — conforms to the wrist better, no cold shock in winter mornings, outlasts leather by years. And when you do eventually swap it out, way cheaper than a steel bracelet.

Clasp is black titanium. Matches the carbon fiber aesthetic perfectly.

How to Set It Up

Quick rundown:

• Winding: Pull the crown out slightly and rotate. About 30 turns from dead gets you going.
• Date: Open the crown guard, pull to first position. Turn either direction to advance the date.
• Time: Pull to second position, set normally.
• GMT adjustment: Use the quick-set hour hand function to create the offset between main hour hand and GMT hand. Say you need a 2-hour difference — just dial in 2 hours of separation. That offset stays locked when you adjust the main time afterward. Push the crown back in when done.

On the Wrist

47mm on my 17.5cm wrist. Big presence but doesn't wear as huge as you'd expect — the carbon fiber keeps the weight way down and it just sits differently than a steel 47. Pairs great with casual fits, outdoor gear, anything with a bit of personality.
