VS Factory Panerai Submersible PAM00984 — Hands-On Review

So I finally got my hands on the VS Factory PAM00984 and spent some real time with it. Figured I'd break down everything worth knowing.

The Case — Titanium Makes a Difference

47mm case. Sounds big on paper right? But in titanium it hits different. Weighed it at 129g — that's lighter than a Sub. Seriously. The bezel opening measures 46.7mm, thickness comes in at 15.5mm which is pretty standard for Panerai.

If your wrist is 16.5cm or above you're golden. I'm at 16cm and it wears just slightly large on me, but honestly still very wearable because of how light it is. Titanium buckle too, deep engraving, individual case markings on each piece.

Strap

Canvas strap with a faux-rubber texture on top, soft suede backing. Comfortable on skin. Stitching is clean all around. One thing though — keep it away from water. This material soaks it up like crazy.

The Dial — This Is Where It Gets Good

Ok the standout feature on this 984. The floating text. LUMINOR and the text below it aren't printed on the dial surface, and they're not on the outside of the crystal either. They're printed on the underside of the sapphire. So you get this hovering effect that looks absolutely sick in person.

There's also a color-shift thing going on — silver from one angle, black from another.

Sandwich dial construction underneath. Top layer, lume layer in the middle, base plate at the bottom. The lume depth you get from this is really pronounced. Whole dial is super clean. Small seconds at 9 o'clock. Hands have solid lume fill, edges are well finished — no burrs anywhere I could find. Date window sits centered.

Bezel

Raised numerals on the bezel insert with a matte/sandblasted base underneath. The grain looks pretty refined to me. Don't have gen in hand to compare side by side so I can't speak to whether the texture is 1:1 — planning to do a gen vs rep comparison down the road when I get the chance.

Lume pip at 12 is nicely rounded. Bezel action is light and smooth, clicks feel solid and deliberate. No slop whatsoever. Once it clicks into position it stays put. The knurled edge is well finished too, no sharpness on the fingers.

Case Side and Crown

Brushing on the case sides is fine and consistent. Crown engraving is sharp. Worth noting — VS didn't build this to actual dive-ready WR specs. Handwashing, a splash here and there, totally fine. But do not take this swimming. Just don't risk it.

Caseback

Solid caseback with an engraved design — little seahorse, fish, sea turtle. Looks great honestly. Engravings are deep and detailed. Shows 300M and the PAM00984 reference number.

P9010 Movement and Functions

VS Factory's in-house clone P9010. Balance wheel sits at 7 o'clock, the bridge finishing is decent. Since it's a solid caseback you'll never see it on wrist anyway — and that actually works in favor of the rep because the exterior finishing is where it counts and VS nailed that part.

Function-wise it mirrors gen exactly:

OperationFunction
Push crown up with bridge unlockedManual winding
Pull to position 2Time setting
Position 1, rotate hour hand two full turnsSlow date change

Date is a slow-jump mechanism. Don't adjust the date between roughly 9 and 10 PM — that's the danger zone, same as gen. Reverse adjustment works too.

Here's the thing that matters. Right now VS is the only factory replicating the hour-hand-linked date adjustment. It's not a quick-set. That alone is a tell for whether what you're looking at is actually VS or some other factory's version. As of now nobody else is producing this ref — though give it a couple weeks and the smaller factories will probably start pushing out lower quality clones once they see how well it sells.

Final Thoughts

The PAM00984 from VS Factory is a strong piece. Titanium keeps it light, the floating text dial is genuinely eye-catching, and the clone P9010 functions exactly like it should. Rep quality is high across the board on this one.
