Here’s the thing about AP — it’s the hardest of the big three to fake well, and it has nothing to do with the movement. It’s the case. The Royal Oak is a lump of steel with a brushed top surface, a polished chamfer running the whole length of it, and a bracelet that tapers link by link into an integrated lug. On the genuine article, each bracelet is hand-finished for nine to eleven hours before it mates to its case.

That’s the wall every factory runs into.

And it’s why AP replicas were mediocre for a decade while Rolex clones got scary good.

Real talk — there are only three names worth your attention on AP right now, and one of them just got shut down. APS (formerly AZ) built the modern AP replica market. They inherited JF’s Dandong 3120 tooling and rode the 15400 to the top of the category. ZF has been in AP forever and does the thin, dressy references nobody else touches. And VSF — the factory I’ve sold for the better part of a decade — only entered AP in 2026 with the 15500, then the 15510. First AP they’ve ever made. Came in at the top.

Here’s the part nobody selling you an APS piece will mention: APS was raided by local police around April 2026 and has been fully shut down since. What’s circulating is clearance stock. May sell out and never come back, or the crew may resurface in a year under a different name — same script as Clean Factory. Between us, I still source APS when a customer specifically wants a reference VSF doesn’t make. I just tell them straight that spare parts and warranty support on a dead factory turn into a black hole eventually.

You’ll also see DDF, TOP, BF, RS, IPF and JF stamped on AP listings. Those factories fill the gaps — frosted gold references, ceramic Offshores, 33mm ladies’ pieces, tourbillons. Some of it’s genuinely decent. A lot of it is a Miyota 9015 with a decorative plate screwed on top, sold at integrated-movement money. If a listing tells you the caliber and doesn’t tell you whether it’s an integrated clone or a modified 9015? Assume the latter.

Why VSF entering AP matters at all — this is the factory that built the Dandong 3235 and made itself the default for Rolex by having a return rate around one percent while everyone else was writing marketing copy. Out of the last 200+ VSF Rolex pieces I’ve shipped since 2023, we’ve had two come back. Two. That’s the pattern.

They move slowly. The 15500 landed years after APS owned the category — but they tool from a real watch and they don’t ship a reference until the movement is settled. That’s the whole VSF pattern, and the Royal Oak followed it exactly.

AP Watch Replica: Royal Oak and Offshore

The Royal Oak line splits into more branches than most buyers expect. Picking the wrong reference is the most common mistake I see across my client inbox. The 15400 is the old 41mm — “AUTOMATIC” printed at six, longer applied markers, a printed inner minute track, solid seconds-hand tail, roughly 10.0mm thick. The 15500 replaced it in 2019: no AUTOMATIC text, shorter and wider markers, a raised minute track around the rim, a skeletonised seconds tail, and 10.4mm thick because the in-house 4302 is physically bigger than the 3120.

The 15510 is the current one, and it’s not just a colour swap of the 15500. The dial logo went from printed “AP” to applied metal lettering, the Tapisserie squares got smaller, the date aperture got darker, the case flank is thicker, the bracelet tapers instead of running one width, and the seconds tail is a graduated skeleton rather than a uniform one.

VSF re-tooled from scratch for it rather than modifying the 15500 case. That’s why the two sit differently on the wrist.

Then there’s the thin end. The 15202 “Jumbo” at 39mm and the 16202 anniversary at 39.4mm are 8.2–8.8mm thick, two-hand with a date, and no factory has an integrated 7121 clone. ZF does the best of them — full titanium 16202 at about 90 grams, gradient burgundy or smoky green — but the movement is a 9015 under a decorated plate, and the date creeps where the genuine snaps.

If that bothers you? Skip the Jumbo entirely.

The Royal Oak Offshore side is a different animal. Thicker, louder, mostly chronograph. The 26420 sits around 14.5mm and 49mm including the crown against the 26240’s 12.4mm and 46.1mm, and it weighs about 169 grams with ceramic pushers and crown rings. The 15720 diver is the cleanest of them in replica form — 42mm, 14.2mm measured, Dandong 4308 integrated, inner rotating bezel with the crown at ten actually functional.

One Offshore warning that has aged into legend: the 15703. JF advertised theirs as a 9015 modified into a 3120. People opened them up and found a Seagull 2824 with nothing modified at all — not even the balance swapped.

That’s not a corner cut. That’s fraud.

If you want a 15703 today, buy it knowing it’s a solid-back watch and the movement barely matters. Want the display back? That’s the 15710, and suddenly the movement matters a lot.

The chronographs deserve a note of their own. The 26240 and 26331 were unfixable for years because the only way to get correct thickness and full function was to transplant a genuine Cal. 1185 pulled out of a Cartier or a Blancpain — a movement alone ran to serious money. The integrated 4401 clone changed that: real flyback, correct subdial layout at three, six and nine, date at five, and side profile that finally matches. Most stable caliber in the AP replica catalogue right now. More stable than the 3120 or the Shanghai 4302.

Piguet Watch Replica: Quality and Movement

The genuine 4302 is 34mm across, 70 hours of power reserve, 28,800 vph, with stop-seconds and a quick-set date. Two factories cloned it as a true integrated movement. VSF’s is made in Dandong and delivers 70–72 hours. APS’s comes from Shanghai and gives you about 50.

That’s not a spec-sheet nitpick.

That’s the difference between taking the watch off Friday night and it still running Monday morning versus resetting it before work.

Telling an integrated clone from a plate job takes about five seconds and no tools. Unscrew the crown, wind it by hand, watch the gear train through the sapphire back. On a real integrated 4302 or 3120, the winding wheels and the barrel visibly turn together. On a 9015 with a decorated plate, the top gears are scenery — they don’t move at all. Second check: the balance should sit at seven o’clock. A 9015 puts it at six. Screenshot that and compare before you pay.

The detail I care about most is the rotor bearing. VSF runs seven white ceramic balls, same as the genuine. APS uses steel. Ceramic doesn’t need oil, doesn’t wear, doesn’t develop play over years of use — steel does, and when it does you get rotor wobble and a service bill. Shake a VSF 15500 and it’s nearly silent, close to a solid-back watch. Shake an APS and you hear the rotor.

That single component affects winding efficiency, amplitude stability and service interval far more than any dial detail on this page.

Now the free-sprung argument, because the forums get it wrong. APS’s late Shanghai 4302 has a genuinely free-sprung balance with four adjustable weights — an upgrade that cost roughly $50 over the standard version. VSF removed the regulator index but didn’t add weights; the balance is smooth-rimmed with a plain terminal curve. Both are free-sprung by the strict definition. APS’s is more adjustable. VSF’s has been quieter in the field.

Between us — I’ve also seen an APS free-sprung unit strip a setting gear inside 24 hours because the setting mechanism was too stiff. Client from Chicago, September batch, watch died day two. If the crown feels tight and gritty when you set the time, stop and get it looked at.

For the 15400, the movement is the Dandong 3120: 21,600 vph, roughly 68 hours, slow-jump date completing over about five minutes either side of midnight. The genuine 3120 is free-sprung with a 21K gold rotor and an instantaneous date. So the tells are a regulator stud the genuine doesn’t have, a gold-plated rotor that’s yellower and lighter than 21K, and a date that creeps instead of snapping. Everything else — plates, screw positions, gear function — lines up, and the case and dial are interchangeable with genuine parts. Which is exactly why the modded-AP scene exists.

One habit worth building regardless of factory: never quick-set the date between roughly 9pm and 3am. The date wheel is already engaged and under load in that window, and forcing it is how you break the exact gears that are impossible to source from a factory that no longer exists. Wind the time forward past noon first. Then set the date.

Where a movement is made matters more than what it’s called, and the AP world proves it twice over. Dandong and Shanghai both build a 4302 and both build a 3120, and the part numbers look identical on a listing. The Dandong versions hold 70 hours; the Shanghai versions hold fifty and have historically been the ones people complain about for stopping and date jams. Access to Dandong calibers is also restricted — most small factories can’t get them at any price. Which is why so many listings claiming “Dandong” are Shanghai units dressed to look the part.

The bearing-hole detail is my favourite because it’s proof of how each factory works. On the genuine, the 15500’s rotor bearing has eight pierced holes that read rose gold; the 15510’s are non-pierced and read steel. APS reused the 15500 part on their 15510. VSF tooled the correct one.

That’s not a finishing preference.

That’s the difference between copying the reference and copying the last watch you made.

The articulating end links matter more than they sound. Had a customer named Daniel from Manchester back in February — 16.2cm wrist, ordered an APS 15500 elsewhere before finding me. His upper end link barely moved and the bracelet arched off his wrist with a visible gap under the case. He sent it to a watchmaker to file the end link free before it’d sit right. VSF’s move at both ends. Small wrists feel this immediately. 18cm wrists mostly don’t.

Where APS still wins: the Tapisserie edge. The genuine grid has a downward-sloping bevel on each square with the CD graining continuing across that slope right to the edge. APS renders that slope properly. VSF’s squares terminate in more of a stepped edge — though VSF puts 12–14 grain lines inside each square against the 10–12 most factories manage. APS also has a cleaner seconds-hand centre pinion under 30x, and it has product breadth VSF simply doesn’t: ceramic, gold, frosted, chronograph.

Colour is where VSF pulls clear. The genuine 15500 grey is light and silky; APS reads too dark, same problem GF had before them. The genuine blue is a blue-violet that stays muted under indoor light and only wakes up in sunlight — VSF’s is lighter and quieter, APS’s is a flat deep blue that’s loud under every light source and, worse, varies batch to batch. VSF’s date font runs warm and slightly yellow, which is correct. APS’s is cool white.

So — if you want a 15500 or 15510 in steel, VSF is what I’d put on my own wrist, and it’s what I stock. The 15500 blue dial and the 15510 green move fastest — we shipped nine 15510 greens in October alone. If you want a 15400, a chronograph, a ceramic Offshore or anything in gold, VSF doesn’t make it and APS clearance or DDF is your realistic option. I’ll source those. AP Super Clone vs Cheap Replica: What the Extra Money Buys

“Super clone” gets thrown at anything with a sapphire crystal these days, so let me define it the way the factories do. An AP super clone means the case was CNC machined from 3D scans of a genuine watch, the dial grid was tooled rather than pressed from a generic die, and the movement is a dedicated clone caliber — not a Japanese base wearing a costume plate.

By that standard, maybe four factories have ever made a real Royal Oak super clone.

The gap shows up in three places. Thickness — a plate movement forces the case 0.5–1mm thicker than the genuine, and on a watch this flat you see it instantly. Bracelet geometry — cheap factories weld a fixed end link because articulating ones are expensive to machine. And the bezel screws. The genuine’s eight hex screws sit countersunk below the bezel surface. Flush or proud screws are the fastest reject at social distance, and they cost nothing to check in a QC photo.

Against a genuine on the next wrist? No super clone survives a close look. The applied markers and hands are white gold on the real thing and steel here, so they read brighter and cooler. The genuine dial’s gradient from centre to edge comes from multi-layer plating nobody has reproduced. At normal social distance, in normal light, a VSF 15510 is a non-event.

That’s the honest ceiling. Anyone promising you more is selling you something.

Buying an AP Super Clone in 2026: Stock, Traps and Timelines

2026 has been brutal on the supply side. Clean Factory is gone, V7 and RC folded, and now APS. VSF is still running but shipping in small, irregular batches for security reasons. The factory notice at the start of the year listed most popular references as in stock while quoting 3 to 15 days to actually ship, and some references simply go dark.

If a seller promises you a VSF Royal Oak in 24 hours without holding physical stock? They don’t have a VSF Royal Oak.

The other trap is label fraud. Small factories relabel their output as VSF and undercut everyone, and it works because most buyers can’t read a movement photo. For an AP, that means checking three things in the QC pictures: balance at seven o’clock, white ceramic rotor bearing balls, and on a 15510, steel-coloured bearing holes. Ask for those three shots specifically. Any dealer who can’t produce them either doesn’t have the watch in hand or knows what you’d see.

On why I weigh structure over dial colour — a while back I carried ARF’s two-tone Datejust 41. Two separate customers came back within weeks of delivery, one with a clasp pin that had worked loose and dropped out, the other with a bracelet retainer pin gone. Not a finishing complaint. A structural one.

I pulled the reference and stopped stocking it.

Dials you can photograph before you ship. Pins and bearings you find out about six months later, and by then the factory may not exist to warranty anything.

For the thin 15202 and 16202, ZF, accepting a modified 9015 underneath.

What I will tell you is that anything advertised as a VSF Royal Oak at bargain-basement money isn’t one, the same way a $400 VSF Submariner is already at wholesale with nothing left over. Add about $50 if you want the free-sprung APS variant on the references where it’s offered. Against a genuine 15500 trading well into six figures on the secondary market, the maths is what it is.
